Similarities and Differences Between Kung Fu and Breakdancing

.     Breakdancing and Kung Fu share similar moves and techniques. Kung Fu has influenced and gave creation to certain moves present in breakdancing Lil’ Lep once stated that, “Kung Fu movies were important, because he learned from them.”

.     Although Kung Fu and breakdancing are similar, some moves have not been adapted to be used in breakdancing. Moves that involve striking, and the use of weapons are not present in breakdancing, nor would be. Also, Meditation is considered to be an important factor in basic training for Kung Fu, this factor has not been used in breakdancing.

.     Break-dancers would adapt certain movements they saw in Kung Fu movies and apply them into their dance. The headspin, windmill, helicopter, wipes, flips, kicks, and many jumping movements have been added to the break-dancers “vocabulary”. Without this, breakdancing would have been limited in its moves.

.     Stances and animal movements have been modified into breakdancing. Freeze moves, or stylish poses, are often created using modified animal movements and stances. One example is the snakebite, often used in the conclusion. Another example, are stances, like the crane stance.

.     Without the use of influencing Kung Fu moves into breakdancing, breakdancing would certainly be negatively different. The evolution of breakdancing may have been slowed without this “dictionary” for new moves.
